Insteon is a home automation (domotics) technology that enables light switches, lights, thermostats, leak sensors, remote controls, motion sensors, and other electrically powered devices to interoperate through power lines, radio frequency (RF) communications, or both.[2] It employs a dual-mesh networking topology[3] in which all devices are peers and each device independently transmits, receives, and repeats messages.[4] Like other home automation systems, it has been associated with the Internet of Things.[5]

Insteon-based products were launched in 2005 by Smartlabs,[6] the company which holds the trademark for Insteon.[7] A Smartlabs subsidiary, also named Insteon, was created to market the technology.[8]

According to a press release on June 13, 2017, SmartLabs and its Insteon technology has been acquired by Richmond Capital Partners with Rob Lilleness of Universal Electronics assuming the role of chairman and CEO.[9]

Insteon is a technology from SmartHome. This powerline carrier technology enables excellent communications between devices, keypads, and a home automation system. During the development of HCA we concentrated on Insteon. Our goal was to provide you with a set of tools to best deploy and manage an Insteon network. If you use a smartphone, you already know how to use Insteon. With the Insteon Hub, controlling and configuring your home's devices is quick, easy and fun. Hub setup takes a couple of minutes and a few moments per light switch, sensor, etc. all you need to do is connect it to power and your home's internet router. If Smarthome could release a comparable Mac OS X home automation solution, I would definitely be interested. I would also like to see a 'spruced up' interface to the Smarthome Manager Essential, Timer app for Windows, although I hear there's a more comprehensive software package in the works.

Protocol[edit]

Every message received by an Insteon compatible device undergoes error detection and correction and is then retransmitted to improve reliability. All devices retransmit the same message simultaneously so that message transmissions are synchronous to the powerline frequency, thus preserving the integrity of the message while strengthening the signal on the powerline and erasing RF dead zones. Insteon powerline messaging uses phase-shift keying. Insteon RF messaging uses frequency-shift keying.

Each message contains a two-bit 'hops' field that is initialized to 3 by the originating node and decremented each time a node in the network repeats the message. Individual Insteon messages can also carry up to 14 bytes of arbitrary user data for custom applications.

Network topology[edit]

Insteon is an integrated dual-mesh (formerly referred to as 'dual-band') network that combines wireless radio frequency (RF) and a building's existing electrical wiring. The electrical wiring becomes a backup transmission medium in the event of RF/wireless interference. Conversely, RF/wireless becomes a backup transmission medium in the event of powerline interference. As a peer-to-peer network, devices do not require network supervision, thus allowing optional operation without central controllers and routing tables.

Insteon devices can function without a central controller. Additionally, they may be managed by a central controller to implement functions such as control via smartphones and tablets, control scheduling, event handling, and problem reporting via email or text messaging. A computer can be used as a central controller by connecting it to an Insteon USB/serial PowerLinc modem, which serves as a communication bridge between the computer and the Insteon device network.

Security[edit]

Insteon network security is maintained via linking control to ensure that users cannot create links that would allow them to control a neighbors’ Insteon devices, and via encryption within extended Insteon messages for applications such as door locks and security applications, should those applications choose to implement encryption.[10]:53

Insteon enforces linking control by requiring users to have physical possession of devices, or knowledge of their unique Insteon IDs in order to create links. Firmware in Insteon devices prohibits them from identifying themselves to other devices unless a user either physically presses a button on the device during the installation process or explicitly addresses the device via a central controller. Linking to a device by sending Insteon messages (e.g., from a central controller) requires knowledge of the address of the target Insteon device. As these addresses are unique for each device and assigned at the factory (and displayed on a printed label attached to each device), users must have physical access to the device to read the device address from the label and manually enter it when prompted during installation.

The security of Insteon RF devices was criticized in a DEF CON presentation in 2015.[11]

Installation[edit]

Insteon devices are configured by applying a sequence of 'taps' (button presses) to a pushbutton on each device to establish direct device-to-device links. Alternatively, a central controller may be used to configure devices.

Each Insteon device has its own unique identifier code, similar to a MAC address, and the technology allows directly linked devices to manage their identifiers.

Compatibility[edit]

Older Insteon chip sets manufactured by Smartlabs can transmit, receive, and respond to (but not repeat) X10 power line messages, thus enabling X10 networks to interoperate with Insteon.[12][13]

In 2014, Insteon released a home automation system compatible with the touch-enabled Metro interface, with devices appearing as 'live tiles',[14] and later added voice control via Microsoft Cortana.[15][16]

In 2015, voice control was added via compatibility with Amazon Echo.[17] That same year, Logitech announced the Harmony Hub-based remote would support Insteon devices when deployed with an Insteon Hub.[18] Also in 2015, Insteon announced an initiative to integrate the Google-owned Nest learning thermostat with the Insteon Hub.[19]

Insteon was one of two launch partners for Apple's HomeKit platform, with the HomeKit-enabled Insteon Hub Pro.[20] In 2015, Insteon announced support for the Apple Watch, allowing watch owners to control their home with an Insteon Hub.[21]

Insteon

Insteon is a technology from SmartHome. This powerline carrier technology enables excellent communications between devices, keypads, and a home automation system.

During the development of HCA we concentrated on Insteon. Our goal was to provide you with a set of tools to best deploy and manage an Insteon network. Insteon is supported by these features:

  • Visual Scene Editor - Rather than creating scenes manually, HCA provides a visual method to program scene controllers and scene responders.
  • Database capture - HCA reads the memory from your Insteon devices. This allows HCA to better understand the links between all of your devices. With that information HCA can keep its state up to date with your devices, have HCA show the connections between those devices, and provide tools to hunt down network linking problems.
  • Map for documentation of network - How are all your devices programmed? What happens if a device loses it's programming or breaks? With the Insteon Network Map you can see at a glance what controls and what responds.
  • Read existing Insteon network - If you have already installed and linked Insteon gear, HCA can read out the contents of a device and follow the links to locate other devices. This method then lets you create HCA devices to represent them. From an Insteon network you can quickly build a HCA design.
  • Device Replace - Replacing a device in an Insteon network is challenging. Not only does it have to be installed but it has to be reprogrammed along with all the other devices that link with it. This is a major job. HCA does it all for you with the Device Replace Wizard.
  • Network clean - It's easy to have linking problems in an Insteon network. If one device gets reset or you remove a device other devices that link with it retain their references to the now missing device. HCA can detect and remove those 'missing' links.
  • Multi-Way wizard - While the Visual Scene Editor is easy to use, if you want to create a multi-way association - where each device controls all the others in the association and all respond to each other - HCA provides a wizard to do all the work for you.
  • HCA program triggering - Trigger programs from Insteon messages.
  • Design checker for Insteon devices - Since HCA has the linking databases of all your devices, it can look for and report on more possible error conditions.
  • You can directly control any device. On, Off, and Dim operations supported.
  • Status can be queried for any device.
  • You can create HCA program triggers based upon Insteon keypad or switch action.
  • You can use Insteon devices in HCA schedules and programs.
  • Using HCA power failure recovery, you can provide better control over individual devices than what the devices can do themselves.
  • Supports using the PowerLinc for legacy X10 sends and receives.

Insteon Home Automation System

HCA supports the complete line of Insteon products from SmartHome and others. This includes the thermostat adapter and the multi-channel device types.

But while all this is great stuff, it's the bigger picture that is important. HCA supports multiple automation interfaces simultaneously. This means that with HCA you can bridge between the Insteon, UPB, wireless, and X10 worlds. All you need to do is attach a wireless interface, an X10 interface, and a UPB interface and HCA can receive and transmit to each type of device and provide the bridge you need.

Do you need to use motion sensors to control Insteon devices? No problem! HCA can receive wireless motion sensor transmissions (using the W800RF32) and then transmit commands to the Insteon devices using the PowerLinc.

Insteon Devices

Do you have some X10 devices, some Insteon devices, and some UPB devices? HCA can receive commands from Insteon keypads and run programs to send commands to X10 and UPB devices. HCA can receive X10 commands and transmit Insteon commands. HCA could have programs and groups that manipulate all of these device types.

Using HCA, a fully functional automation solution can be built from those components that you need - choosing the best parts from all the automation worlds.

A few notes on the 2414 and 2413 Insteon PowerLincs:

HCA can use the PowerLinc to send and receive both Insteon and X10 commands. X10 support is, however, not as good in some areas as other X10 interfaces. What's not as good? Two things: Dimming for the oldest type of X10 devices - LM465 - and those devices that use extended command sequences - the LM14, AM14, and some Leviton devices. If you have many of these devices and you also want to use Insteon you may want to consider using the 2414U for Insteon and a CM11 or LynX-10PLC for X10 commands.
