The following tips and control equivalents should help you in your transition between a Mac and Windows (or WSL/Linux) development environment.

For app development, the nearest equivalent to Xcode would be Visual Studio. There is also a version of Visual Studio for Mac, if you ever feel the need to go back. For cross-platform source code editing (and a huge number of plug-ins) Visual Studio Code is the most popular choice.

Terminal and Shell

Windows provides several alternatives to the Mac's terminal emulator.

  1. The Windows Command Line

The Windows command line will accept DOS commands, and is the most commonly used command line tool on Windows. To open it: Press WindowsKey+R to open the Run box, then type cmd and then click OK. To open an administrator command line, type cmd and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.

  1. PowerShell

PowerShell is a 'PowerShell is a task-based command-line shell and scripting language built on .NET. PowerShell helps system administrators and power-users rapidly automate tasks that manage operating systems'. In other words, it's a very powerful command line, and is especially loved by system admins.

Incidentally, PowerShell is also available for Mac.

  1. Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

WSL allows you to run a Linux shell within Windows. This means you can run bash or other shell, depending on choice and the specific Linux distro installed. Using WSL will provide the kind of environment most familiar to Mac users. For example, you will ls to list the files in a current directory, not dir as you would with the Windows command line. To learn about installing and using WSL, see the Windows Subsystem for Linux Installation Guide for Windows 10.

  1. Windows Terminal (Preview)

Windows Terminal is an application that combines command-line tools and shells from a number of sources, including the traditional Windows Command Line, PowerShell, and Windows Subsystem for Linux. While it is currently still in preview, it already contains several useful features such as support for multiple tabs, split panes, custom themes and styles, and full Unicode support. Windows Terminal can be installed from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10.

If you are a Mac user who is familiar with quickly switching between apps on Windows with Alt + Tab, you may be happy to learn that there is a built-in way to do something very similar on a Mac. Here’s how.

Switch open apps with ease

In the Windows world, many users are familiar with a feature often called “Task Switcher”

; that allows you to quickly switch between open applications by pressing Alt + Tab. This feature has been in Windows since Windows 2.0 1987, and macOS has a similar shortcut.

To quickly switch between open apps on a Mac, press Command + Tab. A row of app icons appears in the center of the screen. If you hold down the Cmd key while pressing the Tab key, the cursor moves between the icons from left to right.

You can also hold down Command + Shift and press “Tab” to move the cursor in the opposite direction – from right to left. Or you can press Command + Tab and use the left and right arrow keys to select an app.

There are other things you can do with the Command + Tab changer. If you press Command + Tab, highlight an app icon, and then press the up or down arrow, you start a mode that displays thumbnails of all the app’s open windows on the screen. This is similar to a long-running macOS function called Exposé or Mission Control.

From there, you can select which window you want by clicking on it with the mouse pointer or by selecting the window with the left and right arrow keys and pressing Enter.

Exit and hide apps with command + tab

You can also manage open applications with the Command + Tab shortcut. With the Command + Tab application list open, select an app and press the “Q” button to exit the application. Or you can press the “H” key to hide or hide the application.

Quickly switch between Open App Windows

Here is a related window management tip that does not involve Command + Tab. If you have two or more windows from the same app open and want to scroll through them with a shortcut, press Command + `(this is the Command and backtick / tilde key).

For some Mac users, remote access software became a category to consider when Apple removed Back to My Mac from macOS Mojave, and it was completely turned off on July 1 of this year. May 31, 2012  Home Access Control is designed to integrate with Perceptive Automation's Indigo Pro home automation software, but can be modified to work with other systems. Home Access Control requires Mac OS X. Mac Connecting to a remote Mac system from a Windows OS can be complicated. The VNC Viewer in the Dameware Remote Support (DRS) software’s Remote Connect dialog makes it easy to connect from Windows OS to Mac OS X and send keyboard and mouse inputs remotely from one computer to the other. Use VNC Viewer to remotely control Mac computers, see exactly what is on the end-user’s screen,.

You can also press Command + Shift + `to scroll through them in the opposite direction. When you find the window you want in the foreground, just release the keys. Happy app switching!
