    To see what updates are available, open the App Store App and see what shows up.

    Make sure you backup your Mac onto an external hard drive before updating using Time Machine or some other backup tool like Carbon Copy Cloner.

    If your Mac can run OS X Mavericks, it can run at least OS X Yosemite, maybe even El Capitan or macOS Sierra-Mojave
    Back up your Mac FIRST before anything!
    Open the Mac App Store and see what OS is available for your MacBook
    Double-click Install OS to begin the installation

    If you don’t see anything, check that your MacBook model supports the update you want (look at Apple’s System requirements).
